On the island, a true cultural haven
Even before setting foot on the island, the first place to explore is the Sens hotel. A few paces from the Pont-Marie, it is amongst the last survivors of the Parisian medieval period. This masterpiece has a very fanciful history, because the king Henri the Fourth had built it for his ex-wife, the Queen Margot, in 1605. Place where she would live a quite hectic and libertine life. Take your time in visiting the sumptuous gardens, because the drawbridge only closes at 8.30pm.
Open every days of the year, (except from June 29th to July 19th). From Monday to Sunday, from 1.30pm to 8.30pm.

Once on the island, look left!
With its painted ceiling, the two statues representing Apollo and Minerva, it is surely one of the most beautiful Parisian residence from the 17th century. On the first floor, we can visit the Guardians room, with wooden beams and arabesque on the ceiling. On the second floor, a living room with sculpted and golden woodworks, and Greek divinities above the doors. A great decoration that’s paying homage to the goddesses of ancient times, is why this hotel has welcomed during its time artists like Baudelaire,
Dumas and Delacroix. The romantic atmosphere is made possible thanks to the prestige of this hotel’s history.

When walking sown the rue Poulletier, turn left once and then right…
In 1633, Claude Le Ragois, a noble from Bretonvillers, reserved the edge of the island. He left Jean Androuet du Cerceau the architectural work. In total, six hotels, including one in Bretonvilliers street. To depict its beauty, try to imagine the Luxembourg Palace decorations. The most beautiful independent hotel of the first half of the 17th century will then be sold and partially demolished in 1840. Finally, the creation of a new boulevard with cause it to lose its gardens. A sad destiny for this historic residence that demanding respect because of its size.

To avoid the traditional candle lit diner with champagne and lobster, why not go for a cheese tasting followed by some nice red wine? I you are interested, stop by the number 28 at Bernard Lefranc, or more like “Bernard’s”. The man is friendlier than he is a cheese seller. Clients are warmly welcomed. Cold and rushed tourists beware; the master appreciates good cuisine as much as he appreciates a fast meal. As for cheese, bries and goat cheese are put forth, but you could also fall for a slice of ham
or eggs from well treated chicken.

Exiting the island towards Notre-Dame!
Grant yourself a solemn moment at the Deportation Martyrs memorial. The monument is impressive given its size, but it is above all its pounding atmosphere that you will remember. The moment can only have a dozen people at a time. At the entrance, two enormous blocks of stone barely leave enough room for a person to sneak into the crypt. You will fond yourself in a dark and ghastly place and yet very rewarding. Quotes of the biggest philosophers and writers and carved in stone in red color. After a
couple of minutes in this underground, you will be happy to breath the fresh outdoor air, will be undoubtedly marked by heavy and unforgettable past.

The 800 years old Notre-Dame is just like Eiffel Tower, a symbol of Paris. It construction has lasted over two centuries but the result is astonishing. In a gothic style, it has survived the history of our world and still bare the traces and souvenirs of it. People come to admire its famous facade, and also its two 13 meters glassed rose windows. Let’s also say that flagstones on the ground represent the “point zero” between all the distances calculated from Paris. A cultural, religious, artistic but also
geographic reference, the Notre-Dame cathedral reunites all these qualities.

To end your “promenade”, a cultural touch is necessary. Behind the Notre-Dame cathedral is the first royal palace in Paris. The building was named Conciergerie (majordomo’s quarters) because after the departure of the kings of France, it is said that they had left the palace to the majordomo, who became powerful in terms of justice and police. At the end of the 14st century the building had two functionalities: the basement served as a prison and the ground floor was used as the Parliament.
Today, the Conciergerie hosts exhibitions where culture and history meet. Until november 29th, an photograph exhibition unfolds the Balkan historic monuments.
