Born in the streets – Graffiti exhibition at the Fondation Cartier, Paris

• 15 Jul, 2009 • Catégorie: Culture, Paris what’s hot ?

From July 7th to November 29th 2009, the Fondation Cartier will shed some light on an artistic trend born in the streets of cities around the world: Street Art. The Born in the streets – Graffiti exhibition will be entirely dedicated to urban artists that made their way into the cultural scene by a new way of expression: Graffiti. From the pioneers from New-York, in the 1970’s to the big names in the contemporary scene, the exhibition will put forth, through photo series, drawings and archives, the premises of this generational art.

During the 1980’s, street art penetrates arts and media intangible circle through diverse writings, dynamism, and courage. It then becomes a transversal and universal language, going beyond the boundaries of design and advertisement. The city and its media will present these new artists (Basco Vazko in Santiago from Chile, JonOne in Paris) who will explain the different influences and techniques that are structuring this vast and complex trend.

The exhibition will also include the pioneers of the Action writing and the Crossing-over, two trends that forged a powerful culture “of the people”. Major personalities such as Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring will be doing magisterial demos for the young audience in order to legitimize this art that has always been separated to the artistic world.
