Catacombs of Paris: hidden treasures of the capital
• 6 Jul, 2009 • Catégorie: Culture •14°C temperatures, a two kilometer distance, hundreds of steps in the underground, walls filled with bones… Do not be afraid, as you are right in the middle of Paris, in the famous Catacombs! At the end of the 18th century, this ancient passage was set to be Paris principal cemetery. Right from the start, the population was worried and yet fascinated by the catacombs. Charles 10th and Napoleon the 3rd had both rushed to contemplate this mystical and timeless place. Renovations were undertaken in 2005 in order to make the visits safe. The lightings got better, structures are more solid, and the walls of bones are higher. An extraordinary 45 minute walk in the underground.
