Pearl, Phuket: The Party’s Temple

For all French people, December is the beginning of the dreaded winter, while in Phuket in Thailand, it is the starting point of the biggest Asian water race. More than 100 boats will be launched in a wild ride of five days and over 2000 people are expected for six nights of beach’s parties up to the dawn. Casa de La Flora: ode to modern beauty

Opened in early March, the Casa de La Flora Hotel is a paradise for modern travelers looking for an idyllic retreat. Thirty-six exclusive villas are nestled right on the beach of Khao Lak, near the National Park of the same name. They all view on the Andaman sea and are fitted with a private swimming pool and little backyard. Designed by the VasLab Architecture agency based in Bangkok, the hotel is a pure representation of the Brutalist style, initiated by Le Corbusier. Despite a strong minimalist style, each villa naturally and harmoniously belongs in the surrounding landscapes. As architect Vasu Virajsilp announced: “Our goal was to allow customers to discover the environment from the inside”. To do so, we walk bare foot on the teak wooden floors, take a shower outdoors and taste the Thai cuisine of the La Arunya restaurant.

The Eugenia: luxury boutique hotel in Bangkok

Forget everything you know about luxury hotels in Asian cities. The Eugenia is a quite old-fashion charming boutique hotel in the very heart of Bangkok. Luxury doesn’t mean gold-plated bathtub taps nor 500 rooms built on the same model here. No, The Eugenia is a beautiful colonial house which has been skilfully turned into a 12-room family hotel that could boast about being as hype as London’s boutique hotels.

When arriving at the hotel, you would think you were in Havana because of the big palm trees near the front gate. However, when entering inside this colonial house from the 19th century, you’ll discover many cultural influences. The rooms are fitted in a sober French spirit with Flanders white sheets, canopies and copper bathtubs. The atmosphere easily transports us to “The Lover” by Marguerite Duras, sensual romance between two opposite people.

The Eugenia had the great idea of fitting its common areas with an eccentric vintage style, displayed by Indian lamps, furniture sculpted in precious woods and hunting trophies that remained from unlikely African hunting trips. The thousands of books gathered in the library aren’t there to decorate. They mention topics for enlightened travelers: art, decoration, old literature, and even cooking.

If you’re still not seduced by these facts, know that the beautiful swimming pool in the courtyard offers a surprising break from the buzzing city of Bangkok and that the Zheng He tea room provides tea and coffee with a subtle taste. On the other hand, the D.B.Bradley dining room – warm and intimate with porcelains and golden tapestries – is a gastronomic haven where the chef skilfully combines French and Asian cultures for an inspired result. You’ll taste a typical Thai pad – the national dish – made of rice noodles, eggs, seeds, tofu crumbs, yellow beans, grilled shrimp in a sweet lime and tomato sauce.

A little extra: Bangkok, “the city of angels”, is also a fashionable world capital. You can shop at the MKB Center (89,000 square meters or 2,500 boutiques available) and rush at full speed in the SkyTrain (elevated railroad) before praying to the 45-meter long laying Buddha named “Wat Pho”!
