South of Osaka in Japan, Koyasan is a mountain consisting of 9 hills in the shape of lotus. This sacred place, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, hosts an extraordinary complex of 120 Buddhist temples from the Shingon school. According to the legend, the first of these temples was founded in 800 by the Buddhist monk Kobo Daishi, also known under the name of Kukai. Since then, the old monastery has grown considerably and Koyasan has become a pilgrimage site in Japan.
