Elodie Boutry: the new favourite of the Elysées Mermoz

• 13 Oct, 2011 • Catégorie: Paris what’s hot ?, Top stories

For its new exhibition, the hotel Elysées Mermoz brought in painter Elodie Boutry who makes her works directly on buildings, always playing with spaces and their constraints. Being fearless, she sometimes needs to climb to put up her colors on walls. She uses their unevenness, a recess or an angle to create a movement and a striking optical illusion. This work on the control of space, on volumes and on the surface seduced Olivier Breuil, the Hotel Manager. Thus, Elodie Boutry will hold her exhibition from October, 18th 2011 to January, 1st 2012. Her acrylic works « in volume » and her coloured drawings with regular dot, stripe or grid patterns will take pride of place.

After studying at the Beaux-Arts of Rouen, she keeps doing experimentations and researches. She develops a reflection on the relation between paint and the architectural space. Elodie Boutry gradually establishes her own plastic language which focuses on the « out of frame ». Thus, her systematic vocabulary (geometric patterns and colours) allows combinations or contrasts which converge on the realization of strong visual suggestions with few elements. Indeed, walls seem to be alive or to be transformed after her touch. But this requires a hard work since she generally needs 4 days to 3 weeks to turn a surface into a work of art.

Holding an exhibition at the Elysées Mermoz means a lot to her. However, customers who stay in this establishment do not all come for the art. Then, an opposite approach gets under way, the artist needs to make the first step, to go and meet the public and not to wait for the public to meet him. History has it that this isn’t Elodie Boutry’s “first meeting” with a hotel, since she entirely designed in 2005 one of the bedroom of the Ye Olde Carlton Arms Hotel in New York.

And as good things usually happen in threes, Elodie Boutry is currently holding an exhibition in two other places: at the Château of Saint-Ouen in the 93 department until December, 17th 2011 and at the Winery near Bordeaux until December, 31st 2011.

Exposition « En long, en large, en travers… et surtout en travers » by Elodie Boutry at the Hotel Elysées Mermoz, from October, 18th 2011 to January, 1st 2012
Inauguration on October, 18th 2011 at 7pm.
