Izis: the Paris of dreams
• 10 Mar, 2010 • Catégorie: Culture •Exhibition « Izis, Paris of Dreams », until May 29th, 2010.
In 1951, the MoMA in New York exhibited five of the largest French photographers (Brassai, Robert Doisneau, Willy Ronis, Cartier-Bresson and Izis). In 2010, the Paris City Hall introduces Izis. Humanist, poet, “peddler of images” according to his friend Jacques Prévert, tells us through his pictures all the harshness of the street and the daily lives of many Parisians. Immigrated from Lithuania at 19 years-old, fleeing poverty for the « Paris of dreams », he suffered oppression and Nazi torture before going underground. He will draw a series of portraits without artifice, guerrillas and rough unshaven, striking of modernity. After the lean years, the photographer is a witness to a romantic and humanist Paris, where problems of reconstruction seem forgotten, but where there is a kind of restlessness latent, unknown to his colleagues. Izis too popular? The one that was called « social » has also shown the Paris of artists and writers, including his friends Colette and Chagall. Thanks to the exhibition of the City of Paris, “Izis, Paris of Dreams”, to rediscover a man who seems to have lived several lives, and that Paris was synonymous with life and dreams. An exhibition that illuminates the artist’s intentions: “Why Paris? Because Paris excited my imagination. It was the City of Light. For me, everything happened in Paris. In 1930, London, Berlin or New York did not attract me. We were attracted to France as a country of Spirit. Liberty, Equality of Rights and Culture, that’s what made us dream.”
