Jonone, Andre, Antoine and the others
• 15 Oct, 2008 • Catégorie: Culture •The Hotel Mayet, close to the Invalides in Paris is a boutique hotel with a refreshing design that gives pride to contemporary artists. Its director, Laurence Raymond, is a find talent person who loves to share her favourite artists with her guests.

Hoosta - What are your artistic tastes?
Laurence Raymond: I love contemporary artists, I am very receptive to their work. I discover exhibitions, galleries or anything unusual in Paris. I operate on instinct, on emotion, I can like the work of an artist or not, but I do not dwell on an art work because it sells 200 000 euros!
Hoosta - What are your favorite artists?
Laurence Raymond: There are so many … I very much appreciate Jacques Nam, a designer-illustrator of animals rather funny. Coro Lopez Izquierdo paints tables, beautiful facades and superb trompe l’oeil, revealing cracks and wear of time. Marinetti Giuliano and his French bronze bulldogs revisited fluorescent or camouflage are incredible. I love Antoine for his cuts and the accumulation of objects in the plexiglass (tubes of paint, brushes …), Combes, Niki de Saint Phalle and Jeff Koons who is currently exhibiting at the Chateau de Versailles. But Jacques Villeglé, you can see at this time at Beaubourg. He is the initiator of the principle of torn posters and collages. Antoine Ripoll is also one of my favorite artists. It is an ultra-modern sculptor who revisits busts of Napoleon in colorful version.
Hoosta - Tell us about your favourite thing of the moment …
Laurence Raymond: I like the tables of Dominica Protti who paints on the canvas, on raw materials such as canvas mattress for example. She also paints handbags, she made me one. There is also the creator of furniture, Michel Haillard. What it does is totally incredible; he makes armchairs, commodes from animal skins and horns. It is wonderful. The sculptor Ron Mueck fascinates me, he creates excessive hyper realistic human beings. Pierre Leloup is a painter from my region, Savoie, he includes natural elements such as wood in his paintings. Of course, I love the work of Jonone and Andre who participated in the decoration of the Mayet hotel.

Hoosta – How did this collaboration start?
Laurence Raymond: I met Jonone in my first hotel, rue de Buci. I needed a decoration for the doors of the rooms. Caroline Andrieu, the Hospital Ephémère, introduced me to several young contemporary artists who make doors. I was very happy … I have kept my doors when I sold the hotel! For the Hotel Mayet, I asked Jonone to achieve a fresco in the lobby, and as it remained a blank wall, he presented me Andre, famous for his character Monsieur A. This meeting resulted of the creation of the fresco lounge.
Hoosta – What are your favorite museums in Paris?
Laurence Raymond: I love the Musée du Quai Branly because I am a fan of African art and masks. I go from time to time to the Palais de Tokyo even though I do not like what is presented. The black and white photo exhibitions fascinate me. I love the fact it flies, it captures the expression of a person. The work of the photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson touches me particularly.
