Liberty Hotel: a golden prison

• 19 Apr, 2010 • Catégorie: Gourmet, One hotel a day, United States of America, Unusual hotels, Waterfront

Follow the footsteps of Frank Abagnale Jr., the greatest hustler of all time, played on screen by Leonardo DiCaprio in the blockbuster movie “Catch Me If You Can”. In the former prison in Boston, where he was resident, the Liberty Hotel, a 5 star hotel, has taken up residence. A good name found for this unique hotel, designed for luxury travelers seeking an unexpected getaway. A true golden prison, the Liberty Hotel promises thrills.

The prison which closed its doors in 1990 gave birth to a 298 room hotel on September 2007. Located at the foot of the Charles River in the historic Beacon Hill, the Liberty Hotel attracts a trendy chic clientele. On entering the hotel, you’ll be struck by the gigantic lobby, two escalators stand before you, surrounding a mosaic depicting scenes of prison life. Take them to join the rotunda reception area of the hotel. Originally designed by Boston architect Bryant, the prison has been readjusted by the architectural firm Cambridge Seven Associates.

The result is striking: the octagonal central building has four circular wooden bays and deploys four wings with three-story arched windows highlighted by segments of wedge-shaped stone. At the same level, discover the hotel’s main restaurant (there are three), the “Clink” where servers wear inspired prison uniforms. The Liberty Hotel also features the best contemporary Italian restaurant of the city, where the legendary Chef Lydia Shire works.

Fancy a drink? The Liberty Hotel has a bar: “Alibi”, located in the former drunk tank of the prison. Some cells have been transformed into alcoves. There, do not be afraid to sip your cocktail surrounded by grids of cells. Change of scenery guaranteed!

More details: For the design of the hotel, the owners have used Alexandra Champalimaud, who with her pastel colors, light pink associated with grey give a timeless cocoon ambiance. Moreover, with their large windows, they offer breathtaking views of the Charles River.
