Portobello Gold hotel in Notting Hill
• 29 Sep, 2006 • Catégorie: Chic hotels in Europe • A hotel room in Notting Hill for $123 including tax is one cheap price for London. Portobello Gold is one of the dying breed of pub hotels that has cheap rates, good service, wireless internet, and charm for such a low cost. Any lower and you’re going to have to go hostel style. No fears here, the bathrooms are privately attached.

Portobello Gold is known for its excellent selection of wines by the glass. Like many English pubs, it has rooms above the bar, but the ones at this little place are far more cheerful, comfy and well-maintained than others. All eight chambers - from the spacious, four-poster honeymoon suite to the twin-bedded backpacker room - are shipshape, with attached baths, telephones, television and wireless Internet access.
The place does sound charming but we looked a little further into this pub-hotel and found some turn-offs. Number one being that you are sleeping above a pub which means noise. Guests also felt like an inconvenience to the management who really only cared about the pub. (As one guest said, “This is not a hotel — it’s a pub that also happens to have rental rooms upstairs.”)
