The end of the paper airline tickets
• 3 Jul, 2008 • Catégorie: News •Since June 1st, airline tickets are now electronic for travellers of the 240 companies in the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represent 96% of world traffic.
In 2004, a plan called Simplifying the Business was launched, intending to make life easier for everyone. However, the electronic ticket, that United Airlines used since 1994, did not exceed 19% of the 245 million tickets sold. To achieve the success of the plan, 150 people have been mobilized.
And the savings will be substantial: 3 billion dollars a year, since paper ticket costs $ 10, ten times more than his colleague digital. For passengers, the securities will be more easily exchanged, without having to go through an agency. They also can reserve a ticket until the last minute. The advantage of this measure : the ecology because this will save 50 000 trees each year, or 5 km2 of forest.
It’s a big step for the environment even if there is still a lot of things to ameliorate.
