Walk in the Saint-Georges neighbourhood in the 9th arrondissement, Paris
• 21 Aug, 2008 • Catégorie: Let's take a walk in Paris •The Opera Plaza Hotel is located in a lively and very trendy area: Saint-Georges, in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. From Notre Dame de Lorette, rue des Martyrs, Helena Valière, owner of Plaza Opera Hotel, suggests the guests a nice trail around the hotel which will lead in less than two hours to the best restaurants, shops and her favorite places.
The route of Helena Valière, owner of the Plaza Hotel Opera.
Upon leaving the hotel, take Rue Lamartine in the direction of Notre Dame de Lorette. This will lead you to the Place Saint-Georges where the statue of Gavarni, famous cartoonist of the nineteenth century, regulates the movement and monitors passers-by. Mocking observer of the Parisian society, Gavarni published a collection of prints titled “Tanks”, characters types Carnival of Paris (a woman or a girl wearing a tank top or a rather tight trousers) that can be seen in the mid-high monument to the memory of Gavarni.
Do not hesitate to lift our eyes to the magnificent mansions along the Place Saint-Georges and which, at the beginning of last century, were the refuge of artists who formed the elite of the Romantic movement. A few meters further, going back to your left, a charming square is waiting for you to taste the charm of Parisian life.

Continue your way, stop for a moment before the birthplace of Gauguin, the No. 56 of Notre Dame de Lorette, then go to rue Chaptal, which houses the Museum of Romantic Life (No. 16). A former house painter Ary Scheffer.
Looking for a gourmet? Let yourself be tempted by the delicious sweet crepe, the creperie on the rue Fontaine…

Continue your path to “Petites Demoiselles”, a pink candy shop to find the ideal nice thing to bring home.
You’ve just arrived rue de Douai. This popular street brings together a huge number of shops selling guitars on a few dozen metres away! The atmosphere is electric and the spirit is very rock and roll. The rue de Douai leads to Pigalle and the famous cabaret “Moulin Rouge”, but you may prefer to borrow the Rue Victor Massé to admire the carved facades, windows and decorative art shops in this attractive neighborhood.
In both living and shopping, rue des Martyrs is the appointment of local residents. There are many small shops, terraces and restaurants.
My gourmet selection:
- Rose Bakery, so British (crumbles are delicious),
- Fuxia, Italian trattoria, who also has take away food
- The bakery Delmontel with its famous baguette (a French tradition for which one dares to patiently wait his turn, in single file)
- The Saveurs d’Auvergne, grocery local products (sausage, fresh tomme, cabecou or fouace, local brioche).
- The pastry Seurre with the grand-mother’s pies,
- Sugar & Nolan’s to eat candies,
- The Souris Gourmande for its tasty cheese,
- The Poissonnerie Bleue that are landmarks for its beautiful colours of the selection fonds.
My shopping selection:
- Baabou, clothing boutique and women accessories,
- Pascaline and her adorable children’s shoes,
- Bridget and her top trend clothes.

End your journey along the narrow adjacent streets to the rue des Martyrs, as the Rue Choron, Rue Milton and rue Hippolyte Lebas. You will discover art galleries (L’Œil du Huit, Eclat de Verres) and some nice pubs frequented by regulars of the district (La Fontaine St. Fiacre, La Table des Vignerons, Les Domaines qui Montent, Villa Victoria, Le Petit Riche).
